How to Create a New Shapefile
Procedure
- From within ArcMap, click the ArcCatalog
button.
- From within ArcCatalog, click on the folder
that will contain the new shapefile.
- From
the File menu, select New, Shapefile.
- Type
in the name of the new shapefile.
- Select
a feature type for the new shapefile. (For example: Point, Polyline, Polygon
or Multipoint)
- Click
the Edit button to select a coordinate system. (If you want
latitude and longitude values, select a Geographic Coordinate System.)
- Click
OK to create the new shapefile.
- Close ArcCatalog and return to ArcMap.
- From within ArcMap, click the Add Data
button.
- Browse to and click on the new shapefile.
- Click Add.
- Before
editing a shapefile, you must activate the Editor toolbar.
- From the View menu, select Toolbars,
Editor.
- From the Editor
drop-down menu, select Start Editing.
- From
the Start Editing box, select the folder that contains the shapefile to be
edited.
- Click OK.
- From
the Editor's Task drop-down menu, select Create New Feature.
- From the Editor's Target drop-down menu,
select the new shapefile to be edited.
- From the Editor toolbar, click on the Sketch
tool.
- From within the Data Frame, click the first
point, move to the second point and click again...
- When the new shape is completed, double-click
the last point to finish.
- From the Editor drop-down menu, select
Stop Editing.
- Click Yes when asked if you would like
to save your edits.
Example
In the example provided, the "Locations" shapefile is created.
