How to Select Features with a Graphic and Export to Shapefile

Procedure
  1. From the Selection menu, choose Set Selectable Layers to select the layers that contain the features you would like to select with graphics.  (In this example we will select Wells with a graphic that we create.)
  2. Click Close.
  3. Select a shape to draw graphics with.
  4. Begin drawing by clicking the first point, moving to the second point and clicking again and so on.
  5. When you are done creating the graphic, double click the last point to finish the graphic.
  6. From the Selection menu, choose Select by Graphics.
  7. The Wells within the graphic you drew are selected.
  8. Now you can export the selected Wells to a new layer.
  9. Right click on the Wells layer and choose Data, Export Data.
  10. Click the Folder button to navigate to a location to save the newly selected Wells.
  11. Type in a name for the new layer and click Save.
  12. Click OK and then Yes to add the layer to the map.
  13. You can delete the graphic now by selecting it and clicking Delete.
  14. In the TOC, turn the original Wells layer off to reveal the newly created subset of Wells.

Example
