How to Select Features with a Polygon and Export to Shapefile

Procedure
  1. Click on the Selection tool.
  2. Select the polygon you wish to use to select features that intersect it by clicking on it (in this example we will use MMS Areas as the polygon.).
  3. From the Selection menu, choose Select by Location.
  4. Make sure select features from is selected.
  5. Select the layer containing the features you would like to select with the polygon you selected (in this example we will use Wells.)
  6. Make sure intersect is selected to select features from Wells that intersect the selected polygon.
  7. Select the layer that contains the polygon you selected; MMS Areas.
  8. Make sure Use selected features is checked to only select the Wells that intersect the selected MMS Area.
  9. Click Apply and Close.
  10. Click once on the Wells layer in the TOC.
  11. Right click on the Wells layer and select Data, Export Data.
  12. Click on the Folder button to browse to a location to export the selected Wells.
  13. Type in a name for the selected Wells that you would like to export.
  14. Click Save and then OK.
  15. The select Wells will be exported.
  16. Click Yes to add the exported Wells layer to the map.
  17. The Wells that intersect the selected MMS Area are added.
  18. (Turn off the original Wells layer to view the newly selected subset of Wells.)

Example
