US Oil and Gas Resource System - Online

This web site is an expanded, free online version of ESA’s US Oil and Gas Resource System (USOGRS), a comprehensive GIS covering US onshore oil and gas resources. The online version of USOGRS includes all of the national drilling information in the ArcView version, which is still available on CD.

To complement the drilling data and play-level and the play outlines, we have added a number of background maps.  So, you can plot drilling data by province or play on maps showing geopolitical boundaries, hydrography, topography, land use, roads, railroads and surface geology.  We have also added a critically important map on the location and administration of all Federal lands. Many of the Federal lands are linked to other web sites providing details on them. All of the features in the maps can be queried for details and hard-copy maps can be printed from the system. For details on the oil and gas data, see the documentation on the ArcView version of USOGRS.

This is the first phase of development for USOGRS-Online. Next we will be adding an extensive collection of charts, texts and links along with a Help system. In the final phase we will add Alaska and offshore resources.

After you sign in, choose the area of the country you want to map. When you are done, we would appreciate any comments or suggestions you have to improve USOGRS-Online (). We hope you find the system useful, fun and an informative example of the power of net mapping technology.

Here are a few suggestions that might make your session more efficient:

  1. Zoom into your area of interest first, then add map themes (by pressing the Maps button on the left). This will result in faster posting of the map to your browser.
  2. When you want details on a theme in a map, make the theme “active” by choosing it in the box on the bottom of the screen. When the theme is active, click on the map feature with the Identify tool or select a group of features using the Selection Rectangle.
  3. Some very large and complex map themes only post when you are zoomed in – this is to improve response time.
