US Oil and Gas Resource System - Online Details

In the mid-1990s, the US Geological Survey conducted its last assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources in the United States . ESA assisted the USGS in that study, both in advising on assessment and in the development of GIS capabilities to support the National Assessment. When the study was complete, the Survey published several flat-file and map data sets with the results. ESA produced an ArcView 2.0 product shortly thereafter that put the National Assessment data and results in to a GIS framework, radically leveraging the value of the analysis of practical oil and gas industry, government and academic analysis.

In 2001, ESA converted its ArcView product to a free, web-based GIS service, which is available here. You can map oil and gas drilling through the mid-1990s based on drilling type, results, plays tested and over time. Charts and tables are also available at the play and province levels that provide an encyclopedic set of data on US onshore oil and gas resources.

The USOGRS-Online system is built on ESRI’s ArcIMS technology. Internet Explorer 5 or higher is required to view the system.

Maps Maps are available for all onshore basins in the US. You can map basin and play outlines and the results of drilling across the country, including stratigraphic penetrations.
Charts You can access hundreds of charts summarizing data at three levels of aggregation: basin-wide statistics, comparing plays within a basin and characteristics of individual plays.
Tables All of the data that is mapped and charted in the USOGRS system is available in tables. This section also gives details on all the variables included in USOGRS.
