Mapping

There are three types of variables that can be mapped from the USOGRS system. The first are the basin and play outlines for over 450+ conventional oil and gas plays in the US. Also included for reference are state and county boundaries.

Second are 1.5 million drilling records. A 40-acre grid was placed on the US onshore and state waters. The Petroleum Information (now IHS Energy) Well History Control System data (approximately 2.5 million wells) was plotted within the 40-acre grid mesh. For each 40-acre cell, the number of wells, number of productive wells, drilling result (oil, gas, dry or mixed), drilling type (development vs. exploration), decade of first drilling, decade of first production and depth of the deepest well were recorded. Also, for each 40-acre cell, a determination was made of the stratigraphic units (plays) penetrated and the results for each unit (oil, gas, mixed or dry).

These data can be combined to illustrate where drilling for a given play took place, results, when drilling occurred and areas of play overlap.

The final set of map data, from the US Energy Information Administration, gives the number of oil and gas fields by county across the country. In a table behind these maps, all oil and gas fields as of 1995 are listed along with basic data.

All of the example maps linked in the tables below are for the area around the Wind River basin of Wyoming.

In the Map titles, XX refers to the province or play number.

Clicking on each of the map links will show you the map legend and an example map.

Table 1
Outline Province Outline.
Province Status Displays whether drilling results in each 40 acre cell were oil, gas, mixed or dry.
Deepest Well Displays deepest penetration in each 40 acre cell classified by 9 depth classes.
No. Wells Number of wells in a 40 acre cell.
No. Producing Wells Number of producing wells in a 40 acre cell.
Oldest Completion Oldest completed well in a 40 acre cell classified by 10 year intervals.
Oldest Producing Completion Oldest producing well in a 40 acre cell classified by 10 year intervals.
Exploration Level Wells in a 40 acre cell classified by the depth of exploration.
State Boundaries Boundaries of the surrounding states outlined in red.
County Boundaries Boundaries of the surrounding counties outlined in green.
Play Outline and Drilling The boundaries of a play.
