The 8th Annual User Conference will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2013 in west Houston. As always this event will present enhancements from the past year, particularly the development of GOMsmart Mobile (for phones, tablets, etc.), as well as future plans.
The conference is intended for geologists, geophysicists, engineers, land specialists, GIS professionals/techs, and managers. The exchange of ideas and directions for our future development are still the top priority of the conference; we will continue to aim for the informality and small size of past years. Registration is free, though limited, but we will do our best to accomodate those who wish to attend. More information will be included in newsletters over the next few weeks.

Of course everyone knows that the federal government is shut down, but we want to point out certain functions that are integrated into GOM3 that are directly affected by the shutdown. On the data side, hourly checks for new data to feed into GOMsmart are disabled while the BOEM and BSEE sites are offline. Discoveries and prospects, which are researched separately, will continue to be updated as public announcements are made.
Linking directly to the BOEM and BSEE reports and scanned documents is also offline while their sites are down. Other government sites are also affected. In ArcMap, the What's New/Web Services button loads data over the web. At the moment, only those sections under ESA Data and ESRI Data are still operating. The National Weather Service is still active, though their forecast models are not currently running. The National Hurricane Center is still active but the web services at NOAA are down. Tracking storms can only be done through the ESRI Data section until these services are restored (especially important if the disturbed area off the Yucatan Peninsula forms into Tropical Storm Karen).
Introduction to GOM3 Class
The next GOM3 class will be held on Thursday, November 21, at the TeachMeGIS Training Center in west Houston. This is a one day, hands-on workshop covering the basics of GOM3 data, ArcGIS software and GOMsmart. An outline of the class is available here (PDF) and registration can be completed at the TeachMeGIS website, www.teachmegis.com.
